With so much of the world working remotely these days, businesses and organizations know that keeping employees motivated is essential to their success. Yes, some are struggling to survive while waiting out the global pandemic, but still, they continue to make clear efforts to encourage and to show appreciation. In fact, studies from the Incentive Research Foundation have shown a direct correlation between recognition and engagement programs and the bottom line.

Here are a few reasons this is true.

  1. People Are Social
    Being part of the community at work is important for employee well-being, and significantly affects the ability to get things done. Stanford researchers concluded “People who feel more connected to others have … higher self-esteem, greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative and, as a consequence, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.” With virtual working, this is more important than ever.
  2. Work Is Important
    Most of us spend about as much time with work as we do with our own families. Even though lots of people are working at home, which tends to blend and overlap the roles, the feeling that we are making a difference is key to our personal identity. Recognition programs serve the role of building a bridge between individual purpose and company goals. By celebrating achievements attached to those values, the effort is elevated and the employee’s connection to the company deepens, bringing with it all kinds of benefits, from increased customer satisfaction ro increased retention.
  3. Success Is Mutual
    Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin Airlines, said “If people are properly and regularly recognized for their initiative, then the business has to flourish. Why? Because it’s their business.” To really encourage people to achieve more, success must be mutual. Incentive rewards or a points-based recognition program provide a chance to communicate and to link results to actions, giving people a reason to stay on track.
